Chronicles of 26/11 Mumbai Attack – A Horrific Story of 10 Men Paralysed the City of 19 Million
We are against the human aspects of certain specific individuals.
Never in the history of mankind, a more terrifying event then the attack of 9/11 happened but just in their sheer audacity the attack of 26/11 on Mumbai were far more shocking..
Lashkar-e-Taiba, an organization banned by several countries and designated by the U.S. State Department as one of the largest and most active terror organization in the world has waged a proxy war against India for years.
Apart from the various other terror acts its member inflicted over the years in India, this organization plotted a tactically different and a never before heard of mission to be executed in Mumbai, the commercial capital of India on 26th November 2008.
It sent a group of ten men by sea to launch simultaneous and coordinated attacks at various places in Mumbai with the express purpose of killing as many people as possible.
Arrival And Attack
On the 26th November of 2008, fisherman Amar Solanki along with his four workers, in search of Threadfin Bream better known as “Lal Pari” a rare fish which found only in deep waters had wandered really far. After some time one of his worker think that they crosses Kori Bunder, maybe they could be in Pakistan water as well. But Solanki decided to wait some time. Suddenly they found another boat heading towards them. From that unknown boat they found one man is waving a white flag. Which is obviously symbol of peace. Within few minutes both boat are come together and with the purpose of demanding help the people from other boat on board of Kuber. They hijacked that Indian boat they started beating Solanki and as well as his worker. Few minutes later one of the unknown boat people call the 10 terrorists. The leader of the unknown boat took Solanki’s worker on his boat and told Solanki that sent my man to Mumbai he will release his all worker. Then after they load the hand graneds, AK-47 and many other weapons. And they are heading towards the Mumbai. As they found that they are reaching to port they killed Solainki and transferred themselves in to rubber dingy (life boat). A rubber dingy approached Mumbai’s southern shoreline (Badhwar Park Jetty) 26/11 of 2008 about 8: 20 PM. Ahead the fisherman’s colony isn’t usually deserted almost everyone was watching India England cricket match.
They reportedly told local Marathi-speaking fishermen who asked them who they were to “mind their own business” before they split up and headed two different ways. The fishermen’s subsequent report to police received little response and local police were helpless. After reaching at Mumbai the terrorist divided themselves in group of 2 people. And they all are heading towards their prefix target. Two of them hired a taxi to reach at CST terminal. CST often known as the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an historical railway station in Mumbai. While they are travelling they set a time bomb in the taxi.
At another side another 2 terrorist with rucksack reached at the Leopold cafe. The terrorists were told that Leopold café is one of Mumbai’s famous café where local as well as tourists spend a nice evening together. And so that terrorist made that a target. At about 9:30 PM everyone in the café was enjoying the India v/s England cricket match. And suddenly they heard a big sound of the bomb. Everyone was shocked and before they know what was happened two gun man from the outside of the café started firing on the people without any mercy. In this open fire 10 people killed including some foreigners, many people injured.
At about the same time the two gunmen opened fire at the Taj Hotel and the café another landmark of Mumbai city is about to assaulted. At the Chateapati Shivaji Terminus about 21:35 PM of 26th of November two men with rucksacks get out of the cab and enter in the train station. The driver didn’t know that they had left a deadly package behind. It was a bomb that set to explore in an hour’s time. More than three and a half million people pass through this station every day. The platform was as usually overcrowded that evening. The two men walked towards the washroom. And suddenly they started open fire on platform no 4. Railway Police Force Constable Jillu Yadaav was on duty at another side of the station he heard gunfire and rushed at platform no 4. Armed with antiquated rifles the railway police missed their targets. At the CST 58 innocent got killed and 108 wounded. After that attack the station looked horrible. Everyone was screaming, children were crying, blood was spreading on the ground.
Three locations in South Mumbai were attacked. Television networks was reporting live. Only up to 20 minutes of breaking the story that channel and other superior journalist realized that it was a terrorist attack. The firing at the Taj Mahal Hotel grabbed the headline obviously. On that day there are about a thousand guests in the hotel. On the sixth floor of the Heritage wing in room no 632, 69 year old banker Ramamurti stayed. He was restless about this attack, but after few minutes gunman knocked his door down and took him as hostage. The gunmen turn his room into their command center. Joint commissioner Rakesh Maria was for 27 years on the police force and is head of Mumbai’s crime branch. The chief has put him in charge of the control room.
Initial Reaction of the Mumbai Police
From around 21:45 PM (26th November, 2008) to 02:00 AM (27th November, 2008) Mumbai police got around 7 thousand calls related about this attacks. They received at least 7 to 8 calls per minute. Police force didn’t even have time to verify the information which they are getting on the phone call.
Normally, Police Force arrives at the scene of crime after the crime has already happened, but this was the first time for the Mumbai police were facing situation when the crime was still happening and was getting bigger by every movement. And to confront such situation they had neither the training, nor the weapons. And on the top of that they are not facing someone who was not afraid of the police because they came here to just kill and die. And then they demand for the outside help. The Home Secretary started the proceedings to bring NSG Commandos from Delhi.
The taxi that left the train station an hour ago lost two bets near the airport killing the driver and a passenger. Another cab explodes at the Mazgoan Docks killing and leaving 19 injured. A bomb goes off at a petrol near Leopold café. The Trident-Oberoi a five star hotel and Nariman House a Jewish Center also under attack. While the terrorist hijacked Hotel Taj another side the two gunmen from the train station exit through a walkway on the prowl. Now they were looking for a new target. Over the next 30 minutes various officer radio sightings at the gunman to the control room but on one manages to engage. Suddenly they found a new target. Few minutes away from the CST there is the Cama Hospital. They rushed in the hospital at about 23:15 PM (26th November) and started open fire.
Heroes of Mumbai Police
Hemant Karkare was the chief of the Mumbai Anti-Terrorist Squad rushes to the rear entrance of the Cama hospital. Armed with carbines and service pistols 8 police man already fighting with the terrorist inside the hospital. But they injured and they need backup. The gunman keep the police away from them by continuously firing and throwing hand grenades. While the rear gate was secured the gunman slipped out from the other exit in the front. At that movement Hemant Karkare thought two of the brightest police office (Additional Commissioner Ashok Kamte and inspector Vijay Salaskar) were with him they why he need more back up? So they headed to the front entrance with their armed AK-47. And later this police action proved a costly mistake to the Mumbai Police. Meanwhile the terrorist left the hospital and unknown to them they moving towards the Police van. After 15-20 seconds of the counter attack from the both side. 3 of the brightest police officer are dead and terrorist escape on the police van. Terrorist took out police van to the alley near Cama Hospital heading towards the Girgaum Chowpatty. Just ahead officers was checking cars for signs of terrorist. The police control room alert the officers that the gunmen have ditched the police van switch to a silver sedan. At 12:30 AM a Skoda car stopped nearby the barrier. That car was at a distance of feet from the barricades. When police man shouted at them, they activated the water spray and windscreen wipers, because of that policeman couldn’t see inside the car. And when police moved towards the car, while screaming at them they quickly turned car to the right and tried to take U-turn. But unfortunately the car hit the divider and stopped. And then police started firing on them, one terrorist (driver) shoot down and another terrorist captured alive. He was Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab. It was the turning point for the Mumbai Police, now they could take information from the Kasab for the terrorist planning and other places where they decided to attack.
At another side in the Taj Hotel and in the Oberoi Trident the terrorist was continuously firing and in Taj Hotel they were getting instruction about what to do next via mobile phones and VoIP from the Lashkar-e-Taiba and militants inside Pakistan. Six explosions were reported at the Taj hotel – one in the lobby, two in the elevators, three in the restaurant – and one at the Oberoi Trident. Meanwhile at the Taj Hotel firefighters rescued about 200 people from the windows using ladders during the first night. CNN initially reported on the morning of 27 November 2008 that the hostage situation at the Taj had been resolved and quoted the police chief of Maharashtra stating that all hostages were freed; however, it was learned later that day that there were still two attackers holding hostages, including foreigners, in the Taj Mahal hotel. At the time of attack a number of European Parliament Committee on International Trade was also there, but none of them were injured.
During the attack both the hotels were surrounded by the Rapid Action Force, Marine Commandos and NSG commandos. The NSG commando killed all 9 attacker as of morning of 29th of November 2008. Abdul Rehman Bada, Abdul Rahman Chhota, Abu Ali, Fahad Ullah, Ismail Khan, Babar Imran, Abu Umar, Abu Sohrab, Shoaib alias Soheb are the name of attackers. In Oberoi Trident Hotel 32 hostages were killed. Nariman House was taken over by the 2 attackers and several residents were held hostage. During the first day 9 hostages were rescued from the first floor and the following day the Nariman House was stormed by the NSG commandos fast roping from the helicopters on the roof. After a long battle one NSG commando Havaldar Gajender Singh Bisht and both the terrorist were killed. At the Nariman House 7 hostages killed.
After 3 and a half day of attack at least 166 people killed including 138 Indian (including 17 policeman and 2 NSG commandos), 4 American and 3 German; approximately 300 people wounded badly. Interrogation with the captured terrorist indicate they indicate no specific orders to kill but to kill as many people, anybody, as they could.
After this attack Mumbai has its own NSG base just like three other indian cities to speed up response to future attacks. The city police revising its standard procedures in crisis had has a modernization plan that include new weapons and equipment. The train terminus limps back to normalcy just few hours after it is attacked. The Trident Hotel and a Taj tower wing reopen open after a month. The most courageous message is given by Leopold café. They keep the bullet marks in memoriam. It shows that they are more successful than terrorist. They are ready to go any limit to stop the terrorism.
In terms of nation attacking another nation this is perhaps the closest that an attack was a shot of war. The Mumbai terror attack was planned with military precision and exposes the city’s systematic fault lines. The inquiry reveals the endemic failures at the state government and the Mumbai police. The city already experienced terrorist and yet the force lacked ammunition, training and staff. In the heat of the moment senior police officer spiel to coordinate their actions and deviated from standard procedures. The most devastating fallout came within the first three hours of the attack, when three of the city’s finest officers drove to get dead trying to secure Cama Hospital. In the investigation Kasab the captured terrorist reveals he is from Faridkot in Pakistan by came 500 young men were recruited by the internationally banned terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba. And Al-Qaeda allies. After 18 months of commando training at Muridke, Mangla Dam, Mansehra, Muzaffarabad at Pakistan 10 men were shortlisted to carry out the attacks. The Pakistan government admits for the first time that the attack was planned and launched from its territory. And they also revealed that some of the planning also in the Afghanistan. But Pakistan denies official involvement in the attack but they present a dossier to India with details of the outlawed terror group Lashkar planned. Some Lashkar observers believe that Pakistani inter-services intelligence or ISI may have goes directed the attack threw Lashkar operational commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi. The 26/11 attack was designed by its conspirators to bring two nuclear states with a history of conflict to the brink of war.
After the 7 years none of the masterminds of the attacks have been brought to justice. But the main thing is that everyone know that the real name of the attackers but we can’t take any action against it, because there is government’s, rules and many other. Now no country is safe. Every country have to work together and wipe out the terrorism. Terrorist killed people indiscriminately but the Mumbai terror attack strengthen India’s resolved to fight tera.
Everyone’s mourning for them. Everyone’s shedding tears.
The Mumbai attacks only teaches us about the rogue mindset of others who see no wrong at harming others and it also teaches about how poorly prepared India was at the time of the attack. We need to update ourselves, unite and actively take action against the monster of terrorism.
